Make a clean sweep of your neighborhood by joining the Park Slope Civic Council at our annual spring beautification, recycling, and clean-up event — the Spring Civic Sweep.
Put on your old clothes and come to the sidewalk in front of the Old Stone House/JJ Byrne Playground, Fifth Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain or shine). Join other volunteers in weeding and mulching street trees; picking up litter on the sidewalks of Fourth, Fifth, and Seventh Avenues; and painting out graffiti on lampposts (supervised by adults).
- You can bring your unwanted electronics – including TVs, computers, and home entertainment equipment — for recycling by the Lower East Side Ecology Center. (Please, no microwaves, air conditioners, refrigerators, or smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.) For questions about electronic waste recycling, visit www.lesecologycenter.org or call (212) 477-4022.
- We’ll give away flowering plants for planting in public areas.
- We’ll have refreshments, and we’ll provide all tools and supplies. Volunteers will leave wearing “I Made Park Slope Cleaner Today” stickers. Community Service vouchers will be available.
- And of course, we’ll all enjoy bluegrass by Vincent Cross & Good Company.
As part of this event, students from M.S. 51 will clean the grounds of JJ Byrne Playground, Old Stone House, and nearby sports fields. They will catalog the material collected as part of the school’s “go green” initiative, while they consider effective trash-reduction and recycling solutions.
