Whole Foods

Traffic & Environmental Concerns

Whole Foods is planning its first Brooklyn store at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 3rd Street, and has made presentations about its plans to the Civic Council on two occasions.

While the Civic Council welcomes Whole Foods to the neighborhood, it has also asked that the giant grocer be responsive to the particular challenges of building in Brownstone Brooklyn, particularly in regards to traffic, and to building in the environmentally sensitive Gowanus area. PSCC's concerns were detailed in an article in the November, 2007 Civic News. Whole Foods' response may be found in the same issue.

At their Nov. 1, 2007 meeting, PSCC Trustees authorized the Executive Committee to:

Engage Whole Foods to urge them to alter their plans as follows:

  • Replace rooftop parking with green and/or solar roof
  • Implement jitney service to and from mass transit
  • Offer free delivery service by electric or bio-diesel vehicles or pedicabs
  • Provide ample covered bike parking
  • Petition NYC Transit to relocate 3rd & 3rd bus stops

Engage local elected officials to seek their help in encouraging Whole Foods to accede to the requests made by the Park Slope Civic Council.
