SJ Avery

SJ Avery, Second Vice President and Forth on 4th Co-Chair

Park Slope has been SJ’s home for over 45 years, although her neighborhood (between 4th and 5th Avenues) was not considered part of Park Slope when she first settled there. Vaguely aware of the Park Slope Civic Council for years, her involvement began when the Civic Council supported her neighbors in attempts to preserve the historic and beautiful PS 133, which was a beloved neighborhood anchor (tinyurl.com/mr7aamd).  The attempt was not successful, but it sharpened SJ’s understanding of how architecture contributes to a sense of place, and the need to protect those buildings that give character to a neighborhood. It also propelled her into an active role on the Civic Council where, as a trustee, she has worked on projects such as the successful campaign to save the Pacific Branch Library from demolition, and the fight to provide a full service supermarket and affordable housing in development on the current 5th Ave Key Food site.

When she first became a trustee, the PSCC was beginning to focus on Fourth Avenue and how to improve it. A resulting PSCC committee, FOFA (Forth on Fourth Avenue), has provided a terrific venue for hands-on work, organizing, and opportunities to strengthen relationships and partnerships with nearby groups, such as the Fifth Avenue Committee, Gowanus Canal Conservancy and Arts Gowanus. SJ is very proud of the work that has been accomplished (safety, greening, street art, better streetscape, local forums), and would like to think that FOFA has helped PSCC to “stretch.”

Most recently, through FOFA involvement, SJ has been the PSCC representative to the Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice (GNCJ), a Gowanus focused organization that protects and advances affordable housing, climate justice, cultural equity and local manufacturing and jobs. This broad-based coalition has been in the forefront of organizing public response to the proposed Gowanus Rezoning. On the other-than-PSCC side, SJ is a retiree from a career in healthcare and non-profit management and jumps at every chance for international travel.
