Red Hook Needs Your Help

In addition to volunteers needed in Park Slope’s local shelters, here’s how you can help our neighbors in Red Hook to recover from Hurricane Sandy, from Councilmember Brad Lander’s website:

Sign outside the reopened Baked.

There is still a huge need for your help in Red Hook (and thank you to everyone who has already volunteered). Here are several opportunities over the weekend: Donation drop off sites throughout South Brooklyn on Saturday (from Park Slope Parents):

  • JJ Byrne Playground (Park Slope), Fifth Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets (at the Old Stone House)
  • St. Jacobi Church (Sunset Park) 5406 Fourth Ave. between 54th and 55th Streets
  • Congregation Beth Elohim (Park Slope), Eighth Avenue and Garfield Place
  • Recovery House of Worship Brooklyn Church (Downtown Brooklyn) ,360 Schermerhorn St. (and Third Avenue)
  • Cobble Hill Think Tank, 274 Court St. (across from the Cobble Hill Cinema)
  • Greenwood Playground (Windsor Terrace / Kensington) near the subway entrance at Fort Hamilton Parkway F Train stop.

Some of the items requested at these drop off sites. Most needed items marked with “**”:

  • **Walky talkies (cell phone service is terrible, this will greatly help)
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned chips, non-perishable prepared foods
  • Juice
  • **Laundry detergent (most needed item)
  • Diapers: toddler (pull-ups)
  • Fresh fruit
  • **Brooms and mops (mops are most needed)
  • Toothpaste
  • Bath soap
  • Paper towels
  • **Flashlights
  • **AAA batteries
  • Ziploc bags
  • Feminine products
  • Pre-packaged food (especially easy to eat like baby carrots, apples, pears, celery, etc.)
  • Pet food

Supply Distribution at the Red Hook Community Center

I am very happy to report that the Office of Emergency Management has set up an office in Red Hook at 402 Van Brunt St. You can donate cleaning supplies:

  • Rags
  • Gloves
  • Trash bags
  • Masks
  • Mops
  • Buckets
  • Bleach
  • Brooms
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Generators
  • Pumps

Visitation Church, at the corner of Richards Street and Verona Street, is now a donation site in Red Hook, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The following items are needed:

  • Flashlights
  • Candles
  • Batteries (C and D are best
  • Paper towels
  • Paper products
  • Toiletries
  • New blankets
  • Diapers

Added Value, the Red Hook community farm (480 Columbia St., across the street from IKEA) sustained extensive damage during the storm. About 100 volunteers will be working throughout the morning and will need a hot lunch. They are asking any kind souls to bring hot, cooked food to the farm at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Also, their computers were destroyed by Sandy and the farm would really appreciate a donation of an old computer or smart phone.

Red Hook Initiative has been doing amazing work this week on behalf of this community in need. They would still appreciate volunteers (at 767 Hicks St.) and donations of flashlights, ice, and medical supplies (but no clothes). Call 718-858-6782 for details.

Plus …

From Park Slope Neighbors:

Recovers.org has set up a site for Red Hook: https://redhook.recovers.org/.  The site allows people in need to post requests, and allows you to register to volunteer or to donate.
