The 2014 Park Slope Civic Council Community Service Scholarships were presented on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the council’s annual year-end membership meeting and awards ceremony at The Old Stone House.
The recipients of the three $1,500 scholarships were (left to right, above): Vivian Phan of The Secondary School for Journalism, Sendie Brunard of The Secondary School for Law, and Erick Hernandez of Park Slope Collegiate.
Students were selected on the basis of their overall community service, scholarship and counselor recommendations. Vivian’s community service included volunteering full-time over her summer vacation as a teaching assistant at the Oversea Chinese Mission. She will be attending Hunter College. Sendie volunteered as a teacher’s aide, a peer leader and a student advisor at The Secondary School for Law. She will also be attending Hunter College in the fall. Erick has performed many hours of community service, which culminated with his commitment to Build On, where he helped construct schools in Malawi over his summer vacation. Erick will attend the New York City College of Technology.
The Civic Council is delighted to award these very deserving and hard-working students each year. In the 2014-2015 school year, a fourth scholarship will be included with the addition of a recipient from Millennium Brooklyn High School.
