Planting bulbs is an easy way to add a splash of color to your garden in the spring. Follow these simple steps to give your bulbs the best start and enjoy a beautiful display when they bloom!
- Orientation: Place the bulb pointy side up and the flat, root-bearing side down. (Tip: If you plant one sideways or upside down, it will still find its way to the surface, though it takes extra energy.)
- Depth: Plant bulbs about 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall (typically 6 inches deep, measured from the top of the bulb to the soil surface).
- Spacing: Space bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart. Plant them in loose clusters or drifts of 5 to 7 bulbs rather than straight rows for a natural look.
- Fertilizer: Add a little bulb fertilizer or bone meal to the bottom of the hole to feed the roots.
- Watering: Water thoroughly right after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs.
- Timing: Bulbs should be planted before the first hard frost, usually by Halloween.
