An update (from Sunday, Nov. 11) on ways you can help those affected by Hurricane Sandy in Brooklyn and beyond, courtesy of courtesy of Park Slope Neighbors. Please be sure to read our posts about other recovery efforts following the hurricane.
The Department of Sanitation announced that it would resume recycling collections on Sunday, picking up recyclables that are normally collected on Saturday. They will pick up Monday recycling without regard to the Veterans Day holiday, and will resume a regular pickup schedule beginning Tuesday.
Locally, volunteers are needed both at the Park Slope Armory, which continues to serve as a temporary shelter, and at Congregation Beth Elohim, where they’re running a major relief effort. You can sign up online for volunteer shifts at the Armory and at Beth Elohim.
For those of you who would like to help the five 78th Precinct officers who lost their homes, the precinct is still accepting cash donations. They’re received all the clothing they need.
Friends of Firefighters have met the needs of displaced FDNY personnel in need of temporary shelter. Their current need is to locate more permanent housing in Mill Basin, Bayside, Bay Ridge, Marine Park, Staten Island and Locust Valley. If you have any leads on rentals in those areas, please contact Marian Fontana at marianf66@gmail.com.
Beyond all that, there are many more local organizations involved in the recovery effort — anyone wishing to lend a hand should have no trouble finding opportunities to pitch in.
