On April 20, Borough President Marty Markowitz sent the Civic Council a letter of congratulation for the work to expand the Park Slope Historic District:
“Congratulations are in order for the dedicated effort of your membership to bring about the first wave of expansion of the Park Slope Historic District by more than 600 buildings. Peter Bray has performed admirably in his role as Chair of the Historic District Committee in coordinating this initiative to achieve the appropriate government protections that demonstrate respect of Park Slope as an architecturally significant and stunning neighborhood. Such tireless efforts ensure that as Brooklyn grows, it does so in a way that strikes the right balance between preserving the character of some of our most beautiful historic areas while also planning for our bright future.
“It was privilege a for me to testify in support, in October of 2010, of this community-lead initiative before the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). For the residents, this designation furthers the quality-of-life benefits from the recent community-wide rezoning by preserving the unique ambiance of this neighborhood for future generations. The beauty and craftsmanship of the structures in Park Slope have stood the test of time, and they represent the best of the warmth and character that define Brooklyn. And for Brooklyn, it represents good planning-because we are preserving the architectural integrity of residential designs which every year lure more lovers of art and architecture to our borough.
“I look forward to at least one more opportunity for another phase of the expansion effort- this time to the north – to be placed on LPC’s Calendar for a hearing during this Administration. I understand that the organization is kicking off its outreach in this regard on April 27.
“My staff remains available for consultation as your embark on this next phase.
“Sincerely, Marty Markowitz”
