Making a Bid for a New BID

Organizers of the proposed business improvement district on Seventh Avenue are hosting an informational meeting where the public can learn more about and share their opinions on the BID.

The Park Slope Chamber of Commerce, elected officials, and community groups are seeking to create the new local BID to help improve the cleanliness of our streets and sidewalks, beautify and green the area, produce promotional events and materials, and provide additional security through storefront cameras and volunteer patrols. The proposed district includes all properties fronting Seventh Avenue from St. Johns Place to 16th Street, including contiguous side street commercial properties.

In February, the Park Slope Civic Council formally endorsed the initiative at its monthly trustees meeting. In the subsequent letter to Chamber of Commerce President Tammy Shaw, Civic Council President Michael Cairl wrote: “It is clear to us that creating a BID is the best way to ensure the maintenance and attractiveness of Seventh Avenue and to encourage visitors and shoppers. The experience of the nearby North Flatbush BID and Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID shows how an energetic organization can improve commerce and street life. …

“Rest assured we will work closely with the BID as it comes into being and grows. And we are confident that the Seventh Avenue merchants and the whole community will see a better, thriving Seventh Avenue through your efforts and ours.”

The March 5 meeting is part of efforts to reach out to property owners and commercial tenants. With majority support from the community, organizers can seek legislative authorization for the district.
