Outreach Committee

Spreading the Word of the Civic Council

Established in 2009, the Outreach Committee coordinates the Civic Council’s informational, marketing, and membership efforts. Our members focus on getting the word out about the Civic Council in both Park Slope and neighboring communities — who we are, what we’re working on, and how to get involved.

We use all Civic Council events as opportunities to inform others about our organization’s myriad activities, as well as getting more people involved both as members and as volunteers. Our goal is to stay connected with our membership and other organizations so that we can work together, hear from our neighbors, and help build and maintain a strong community.

The Outreach Committee has many means by which we focus on that goal. Civic News, the Civic Council’s newsletter, underwent a major redesign in 2011 to better inform the Park Slope community and reach a wider audience; the newsletter is published in a print edition four times per year and in an online version 10 times each year. We also work with other Civic Council committees to publicize programs and initiatives using press releases, media advisories and contacts, and the web (Facebook, Twitter, and our redesigned website). We also work closely with the membership secretary so that the Civic Council better serves its members.

The Civic Council’s annual public forums are another way to inform the community. In 2011, the Outreach Committee spearheaded the very successful forum, “Growing a Business in Park Slope.” We will continue to assist future forum committees in using this event to highlight “hot” neighborhood issues, and follow through with new Civic Council committees and initiatives that often arise from these community gatherings.

The Outreach Committee is working on many ways to improve the Civic Council’s efforts within the Park Slope community, from our first fundraising event called Food for Thought to greater coordination with our local businesses. We represent the Council’s “hub” for marketing and publicity, and we are always looking for new members to join our lively and motivated committee!
