The city’s Department of Sanitation is holding disposal events this spring in Brooklyn and the other boroughs that will give residents a one-stop spot to get rid of “SAFE” products — solvents, automotive, flammable, and electronic goods, all of which are in reality potentially harmful items found around the house.
The local event will take place Sunday, April 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Prospect Park’s Park Circle, corner of Parkside Ave and Prospect Park Southwest. The department’s website lists locations for the other boroughs and ways to dispose of these goods if you can’t attend.
The blue and green recycling bin mascots will make appearances at all the SAFE disposal events. The mobile Recyclarium exhibit at the Manhattan SAFE disposal event on April 28.
Only NYC residential waste will be accepted at these SAFE events (no business or institutional waste permitted). No commercial vehicles allowed. Residents must provide proof of New York City residency.
Items accepted include auto fluids, batteries, electronics, glues, medications, paint products, solvents, and more. When deciding what items to bring, look for products labeled with the following signal words: DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION. Products labeled DANGER represent the highest hazard level. Please also bring any other materials stored in your home that you know may be harmful.
