Over 350 people gathered on Saturday, November 6th to pick up litter from sidewalks, weed and mulch tree pits, drop off e-waste, or shred personal documents during the Civic Council’s Fall Sustainability Day.
Using the John Jay Educational Campus as home base, volunteers spent the day cleaning and beautifying the tree beds and sidewalks along Seventh Avenue. They also gave away 1,200 daffodil bulbs.
For the first time free document shredding was offered during the event. Everyone in the community was invited to bring their financial records and confidential documents to the Sweep for safe, secure shredding by TIME Shred. Documents were destroyed on site on a mobile shredding truck equipped with an internal camera that allowed people to watch their papers be destroyed.
The Lower East Side Ecology Center was also on hand to collect unwanted electronics for recycling.A heartfelt thank you to all of the Civic Council trustees, families and volunteers who helped make Sustainability Day such a resounding success. We extend particular gratitude to Sustainability Committee Co-Chairs Candace Woodward and Rory Dineen for their planning and organization of the event; to Kevin Conway of the John Jay Educational Campus for allowing the Civic Council to use the sidewalk in front of the campus; and to John Jay security and custodial staff.
