2023 ORTNER AWARD

2023 ORTNER PRESERVATION AWARD REQUIREMENTS

The Park Slope Civic Council’s Evelyn and Everett Ortner Park Slope Preservation Awards were inaugurated in 2014 to help maintain the unique identity of Park Slope. The awards recognize construction projects that complement the original architecture of Park Slope and actions by its residents that protect or enhance its appearance. The Awards honor Evelyn Ortner (1924-2006) and Everett Ortner (1919-2012), long-time residents of and advocates for the community who, beginning in the 1960s, played a pivotal role in transforming Park Slope – then a neighborhood in decline – into the vibrant community that it is today.

There are no costs for applicants and recipients of Ortner Awards. The PSCC is responsible for all expenses associated with the program.

The application deadline is February 1, 2023.

There are six categories of Ortner Preservation Awards:

  • EXTERIOR RESTORATION OF A HISTORIC STRUCTURE: the repair and/or recreation of substantial and significant external architectural details of a historic structure that preserve the integrity of its decorative and functional elements.
  • REHABILITATION OF A HISTORIC STRUCTURE: major exterior modifications, alterations and/or additions to a building to make it habitable and compatible with its original architectural character.
  • ADAPTIVE REUSE OF A HISTORIC STRUCTURE: transformation of a building to serve a new purpose while maintaining its architectural integrity, thereby sustaining the unique identity of the neighborhood.
  • NEW CONSTRUCTION: design and construction of a new building that, while contemporary, complements the historic character of neighboring structures.
  • COMMUNITY INTERVENTION: action by an individual or group that protects the appearance of our neighborhood.
  • NEIGHBORHOOD ENHANCEMENT: a project or activity that improves the appearance of Park Slope.
